Carlyle Labuschagne's 'The Broken Destiny' Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway

 SYNOPSIS:

Ava knows much more, and feels much more than she is allowed to. When she starts questioning her origins and the destruction of Earth, things go horribly wrong for her. She is saved by a Minoan boy from an attempted kidnapping on her life – the perpetrators are evil Zulus and their dark ancient magic. Humans and Minoans are forbidden to interact with each other, and as she is taken back to their village she finds out why – they know of her, her kind and her destiny to save a dying race. Ava must rid them from the Council’s ruling and free the galaxy of The Shadow. Her destiny is to rise above the fall, because within her soul is the key to an archaic weapon that has been missing in the mix of a genetic code since the time of the ancients. As the prophecy unfolds she learns of her bloodline – a bloodline that makes her less human than she could ever have imagined. She alone has the power to destroy or save, but the mind-shift is a horrible thing. Ava will become what she hates to save the ones she loves. Beaten, poisoned, possessed and betrayed by her own emotions, she has no choice but to rise above it all… for that is her Destiny.

My Review:

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So, to be completely honest, when I read the synopsis of this book my initial reaction was: huh? It sounded really confusing and I was worried I wouldn't really get it or know what was going on. However, actually reading the book was a totally different experience.

This story is all about a girl named Ava. She is a sixteen year old girl who lives on a planet called Poseidon after Earth finally became uninhabitable due to global warming, war, and evil undertakings. She feels very different and isolated from most of her peers and desperately seeks normalcy. New people enter her life after an attack on her life and she begins to realize why she's different and that she has an important destiny. In learning this she comes to terms and accepts who she is. She ultimately is forced into becoming something she loathes in order to save those she loves.

I absolutely loved this book. It totally could have been confusing and convoluted if not done properly, but the writing and storytelling in this book are phenomenal. The world inside the pages is complex and intricate, but it is told with such detail and in a way that keeps your attention while slowly revealing details. There are no obnoxious, obvious info-drops. The details are given when they are important to the story.

I also loved the characters in this story, specifically Ava. Ava is a perfect young adult character. She is so relatable, yet incredibly brave. She feels out of place and awkward which most teenagers can relate to. Even though she has a great destiny she makes mistakes and poor choices just like anyone else. But at the same time she's willing to do anything for those she loves. She is the perfect young adult character.

This book was both intriguing and unique. Labuschagne has created a detailed, vivid world that is unlike any I have ever read. It is beautifully, I dare say lyrically, written. It's hard for me to believe this is a debut novel. Not only is it well written, but the story is full of twists and turns that keep you guessing. I truly care about the characters in this book and I CANNOT wait to read what happens next. This book is most definitely one to savor.
